Family Map

Family Map

The Family Map Inventories (FMI) are face-to-face interviews that family service workers or home visitors have with families. FMI is available in three versions: Prenatal, Infant-Toddler (Birth to 3 years), and Early Childhood (3 to 5 years). The FMI questions are designed to identify strengths and areas for support and for the purpose of setting child and family goals in areas that align with Head Start’s Parent, Family and Community Engagement (PFCE) Framework.

The FMI was developed by researchers from the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine
at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS). The Inventories are research-based
and were developed in collaboration with early childhood educators and families with young
children. DIEEC researchers and New Directions Early Head Start (NDEHS) have been
collecting data and analyzing using the Family Map data for use in service delivery and program
evaluation since September 2016. We have a long-standing partnership with the FMI developers
at UAMS in order to conduct research at a larger scale, including work on child play and
literacy.
